In 1999, Nathan Walkingshaw came up with several ideas to help eliminate back injuries in the EMS field, including the innovative track device called the Descent Control System, with the intention to help any responder safely transport a patient down a flight of stairs and diminish the potential of an overexertion injury. Not having to carry a patient and cot down stairs, but rather just controlling the descent with a hand brake, was a new concept that worked very well. The DCS was excellent in controlling descents on steep inclines and on varied terrains, including snow, dirt and gravel. It could also be used very effectively as a cribbing device to stabilize cot movement when transferring from a cot to another surface.
In the summer of 2004, Paramed was established to refine, market and sell the Descent Control System. Full commercial production started later that same year after Paramed signed an exclusive distribution agreement with Bound Tree Medical, one of the largest medical supply companies in the United States. The DCS product line led to the design and development of the ParaSlyde, a hospital evacuation product with several complimentary accessories such as the SafeSlyde package, ParaSleeve Storage case, BaraSlyde, and BaraSleeve Storage case.
The Paramed team has recently launched a new product called the MÖV, a motorized stair-climbing chair with a weight capacity of 500 pounds. This chair is designed to transport a non-ambulatory patient up and down stairs without having to lift or carry them, thus enhancing the safety of those involved in the medical industry while increasing the patient's mobility.
At Paramed, we are proud to bring to market innovative ideas from someone who has worked as a street medic, ideas realized by one who experienced the injuries and has seen the negative impact on today's workers. It is our vision to invent, design and manufacture best in class products that provide control in an uncontrolled environment.
Paramed™ is an entrepreneurial company dedicated to inventing, designing and manufacturing best in class products that provide control in an uncontrolled environment.
